For some older Epson Large Format Printers (i.e. Stylus Pro 4000, 7600, 9600, and 10600) and for the Stylus Photo 2100 printer, driver version 3.09 can be used in Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x). The Stylus Pro 11880, 3800, 3880, 4800, 4880, 7800, 7880, 9800, 9880 series of printers are supported with driver version 6.5x.
If you install driver version 3.09 on a Macintosh with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x) on which a newer 6.5x driver is already installed, you see an error advising that there is a conflict between a "Preferences" file and a "Preferences" folder.
Error message: "A file named "Preferences" on "MacOS 10.6" has the same name as a folder that needs to be installed. Click Cancel to stop the installation or click Delete to replace that file."
This conflict occurs as the name and location of an existing Epson file (an Alias) matches that of the new folder that the installer is trying to create.
This error only occurs if you install the drivers in the order mentioned above. It does not occur when you install driver version 3.09 first and then install driver version 6.5x.
In order to avoid this error and allow both driver version 3.09 and 6.5x to be installed, please follow the steps below:
You will need to uninstall all existing Epson printer drivers, delete all existing printer queues, and remove all Epson printer files. Please follow the uninstall process detailed in article How to uninstall a printer driver from Mac OS X - the link is also available in the "Related articles" section at the top-right of the article.
Install Epson driver version 3.09 on the Macintosh computer. You must install this version first.
Install any later Epson drivers (e.g. version 6.5x).
Add the printer/create the printer queues in Print & Fax.
If you cannot uninstall all existing Epson drivers from the Macintosh computer and continue to receive the described error message when installing the 3.09 driver, follow the steps below:
Remove the Preferences Alias file from \Library\Printer\EPSON\InkjetPrinter directory.
Install printer driver version 3.09.
Open directory \Library\Caches\Epson and copy all the files from this location to \Library\Printer\EPSON\InkjetPrinter\Preferences folder.
When you add a new driver, it creates a file named com.epson.ijprinter.x.ut.plist (where 'x' is a number); this file is needed in order to print.
You may have to rename the file that you want to copy from the 'Caches' folder to the 'Printer' folder if the same name already exists. You can do this by changing the number (represented by 'x' in the file name example mentioned earlier).
You may have to delete and re-add the printers from the Print & Fax utility after the preferences location change.
After you have followed these steps, you should be able to access the driver's Printer Settings dialogue and print successfully to each of the target printers from the same Macintosh computer with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x).

Stylus Pro 9800, driver version 6.5x
Using driver version 3.09 with 64-bit applications
If you use applications that are natively running in 64-bit mode on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.x) e.g. Safari, Preview, then you may experience a problem with accessing the Print Settings dialogue when trying to print using driver version 3.09.
